Titanium carbide

Titanium carbide chemical formula TiC. Steel gray crystal with metallic luster. It has thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity, and its electrical conductivity decreases with increasing temperature, so it exhibits metallic properties. It is a very hard, high melting point compound with hardness second only to diamond and a microhardness of 2850 kg/mm. It belongs to NaCl type tetragonal system, lattice constant a=4.173×10cm, melting point 3150°C, boiling point 4820°C, relative density 4.9.

When heated to 1500 ° C or higher in H 2 gas, the de-C effect gradually occurs. It reacts with N2 gas at 1200 ° C or higher to form a mixed composition of titanium carbonitride Ti (C, N).Titanium carbide

The rate of oxidation at 800 ° C is slow, but powdered TiC can be burned in O 2 at 600 ° C to form TiO 2 and CO.

It reacts with O 2 gas at 1200 ° C to form TiO 2 and CO. It does not interact with water, but it can react with water vapor to form TiO2, CO and H2 at temperatures above 700 °C. Does not react with CO, reacts with CO2 at 1200 °C to form TiO2 and CO.

Do not dissolve in hydrochloric acid and lye, soluble in nitric acid and aqua regia. Industrially, it is obtained by reducing a mixture of smelting ilmenite concentrate and carbon at 1900 ° C - 2000 ° C. Used in the manufacture of cemented carbides, also as electrodes for abrasives and arc lamps.

TiC has a wide range of applications. With the further improvement and industrialization of nano-TiC powder technology, the performance of nano-TiC powders for the preparation of corresponding materials will be greatly improved and improved, and some may have a qualitative leap, attractive prospects and broad applications.
